Health Innovation Network (HIN) – High Volume Low Complexity Patient Recruitment

The Health Innovation Network (HIN, the Academic Health Science Network for South London who is hosted by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust) are currently looking for members of the public to partake in 1:1 discussions about their experience of surgery in London during COVID-19.

This is to contribute to a project looking at fast track surgical hubs which were created during the pandemic to boost the amount of planned surgery that could be carried out across the region. The hubs cover twenty-nine types of high-volume, planned operations – including cataract removal, hysterectomies and knee replacements. The aim is to reduce the number of patients waiting for surgery and to improve access and quality of care.

Due to the rapid implementation of these hubs, public input has not been sought until now. The HIN would now like to hear about peoples experience of surgery/waiting for surgery to see if there are any trends in experiences between different groups of people and to help improve the service for future patients.

They would like to hear from people who:

have had, or are waiting for, planned surgery in London in the last 2-3 years or,
care for others who have had, or are waiting for, planned surgery in London in the last 2-3 years
where the surgery is related to any of the following specialities: Urology, Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, General Surgery or Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT).

If you choose to partake, you will have a telephone or video call with a member of the HIN lasting up to 1.5 hours to find about your recent experiences of NHS surgical services and how you feel about potential changes to these services. You will be offered £15 per hour (up to 2 hours) for participating as a thank you for your time.

More information can be found on the HIN website here, or in the attachment.
